Facilities/Logistics Survey for Parents

Please list any questions below that you feel would be helpful in surveying the parents in regards to the restructuring of the Olean City School District. We plan to pass this survey out to parents at the November 23 & 24, 2010 Parent Teacher Conferences that occur in all four elementary school buildings.

Attached below are some of the questions suggested at the 10-4-2010 Facilities/Logistics committee meeting.

Please feel free to add to that list.

The committee felt that in an effort to be honest and forthright with all the families affected by the restructuring plan, we should send a survey home with the children simply asking what, if any, hardships they would endure if the plan was implemented. If the cost of the survey is a concern then perhaps classroom teachers could ask a few simple questions of their students to be answered with a raising of hands.
For All
1. Did you walk to school today?

2. Does your family own a vehicle?

3. If start/finish times were staggered among the school buildings, would this be an issue with child care?
For Pre-K – 2nd Grade
1. Did you walk to school with an older brother, sister or neighbor?

For 3rd – 5th Grade
1. Do you help a younger child walk to or from school?

Question ideas:

How many children do you have that attend this school? What ages and grades are they?
How many children will you have in this school in the 2012-2013 school year?
If the school day started sooner or later than it currently does (currently the school day starts at 8:20) would it impose any financial hardships on your family?

The following statement was from Ira Katzenstein. These are his thoughts on the Parental Survey.

Thanks. I have requested membership. I may not be able to get back to it…especially if I am not added today. So…here are my thoughts to share about the ‘restructuring survey.’ I will post them as my comments as soon as I can.

The survey should be fair, balanced, and unbiased. It should begin with a preface or background outlining what exactly is under consideration.

The survey should inquire about ‘advantages’ as well as ‘disadvantages.’ The survey should ask for a ‘bottom line’ opinion – perhaps about whether the individual is for-against- neutral; as well as saying something to the effect of I need more information specifying perhaps what that might be.

Some advantages might be: more children same age/grade (socialization), greater focus on grade levels – individualization/team teaching, cost savings and it’s impact on taxes. I bet there are others.
Some disadvantages might be: parental convenience (transportation to an additional building due to separation of elementary grades or if school hours were to change), one more building transition, or breaks up tradition. Like with advantages, there are probably others too.

As to the study of space, I will need to analyze the data once I can get at the wiki (I may need to do so from a beach in Hawaii). But maybe you know - in reaching the conclusion that IJN could not accommodate the higher elementary grades, was it caused in whole or part because ‘special education’ or BOCES classrooms contributed to the space shortage? Because I can see where only 1 of the 2 buildings housing each grade group needs to house these classes. I am sure this approach would pass legal muster.
